Fall Home Maintenance Checklist for Southern Indiana & Louisville
Fall cleanup usually starts with the leaves. But while you have the rake out, it is worth taking a closer look at the rest of your home's exterior.
Full gutters, green siding, slick steps, and leaves packed between deck boards are all good things to address before winter. For homeowners in Southern Indiana and the Louisville area, fall is a practical time to catch up on exterior maintenance while there is still time to plan around the weather.
Here is what we recommend checking, what you can handle yourself, and where professional cleaning can help.
Why fall is a good time for exterior cleaning
By fall, your property has been through months of rain, humidity, mowing, and outdoor use. Dirt and organic growth may be more noticeable on shaded siding, concrete, and wood. Cleaning those areas gives you a fresh starting point before winter and makes it easier to see maintenance issues that need attention.
It also gets the house, front steps, and walkways ready for holiday visitors. You do not have to wait until spring to take care of buildup that is already there.
The timing matters, though. Washing needs suitable temperatures and conditions, and staining or sealing requires the right drying and curing window. We recommend planning ahead instead of trying to squeeze everything in just before a freeze.
1. Check gutters and downspouts
Leaves and small branches can block gutters and downspouts. During rain, look from the ground for overflowing sections, water spilling behind the gutter, or a downspout that is not draining as expected.
If your gutters are already blocked, do not wait for every leaf to fall before addressing them. If they are flowing properly, plan a cleaning after the heaviest leaf drop and check them again as needed.
What you can do: Keep accessible downspout outlets clear of leaves and check that extensions are attached and directing water away from the house. Leave work that requires unsafe ladder access or getting onto the roof to a professional.
One distinction: Cleaning debris out of a gutter and removing dark streaks from its outside face are separate services. Gutter brightening addresses exterior staining; it does not clear a clogged downspout.
2. Clean walkways, steps, and concrete
Pay attention to the places you use every day: the path from the driveway, the front steps, the back patio, and shaded sections of sidewalk. Wet leaves and algae buildup can make these surfaces slippery.
What you can do: Sweep or blow leaves off regularly, especially before they collect in wet layers. Move planters and outdoor items so you can check the areas underneath them.
For established buildup, professional concrete cleaning can help clean the surface more thoroughly. Cleaning does not repair cracks or uneven concrete, so add those issues to your maintenance list separately.
If you are considering concrete sealing, fall may provide an opportunity, depending on the surface and forecast. The concrete must be properly prepared, and conditions must meet the selected product's application and curing requirements.
3. Look over your siding, soffits, and trim
Walk around the house and look for green growth, dirt, and cobwebs, particularly on shaded sides and under overhangs. If the siding needs attention, you do not need to wait until spring to schedule a wash.
For most siding, we use a soft washing approach with an appropriate cleaning solution and a controlled rinse. The method should match the material and its condition.
What you can do: Note loose siding, damaged trim, failing caulk, or openings that need repair before cleaning. Keep stored items and leaf piles from collecting against the house.
Our house washing service addresses exterior buildup, but washing will not repair deteriorated paint, damaged siding, or worn seals.
4. Clear decks, porches, and fences
Leaves tend to collect in corners, around furniture, and between deck boards. Start by clearing that debris so you can see the condition of the wood and the existing finish.
What you can do: Sweep regularly, clean and dry outdoor furniture before storing it, and check for loose boards or railings. Avoid aggressive pressure washing that can gouge wood or leave an uneven surface.
If the wood needs cleaning or staining, have it assessed while there is still time for preparation and drying. A stain job should be scheduled around the product requirements and the actual condition of the wood, including its moisture level.
5. Give the roof a look from the ground
Look for visible debris, moss, dark streaks, or damaged shingles. You do not need to climb onto the roof to decide that something deserves a closer look.
Roof cleaning and roof repair are different jobs. Visible damage or a suspected leak should be evaluated by a roofing professional. When cleaning is appropriate, the method must suit the roofing material. High-pressure washing is not appropriate for asphalt shingles.
A simple homeowner checklist before freezing weather
Keep leaves off steps, walkways, patios, and decks.
Check gutters and accessible downspout outlets after heavy leaf drop.
Disconnect, drain, and store garden hoses before freezing temperatures arrive.
Winterize outdoor faucets and irrigation according to your system's instructions.
Check door weatherstripping and look for gaps or damaged exterior seals.
Clean and dry outdoor furniture and cushions before storage.
Make sure exterior lights work along entrances and walkways.
Schedule needed cleaning, repairs, staining, or sealing while suitable weather remains.

When should you schedule fall exterior cleaning?
House washing and concrete cleaning can be handled earlier in the season. Gutter cleaning often makes sense after the bulk of the leaves fall, with earlier attention if there is already a blockage. Staining and sealing need more planning because drying time, temperature, and rain all affect the schedule.
